Today my wife and I returned to the Environmental Education Center at Lord Stirling Park for a summer visit to the Discovery Garden and to walk around the center.

This past weekend we stopped by the Environmental Education Center at Lord Stirling Park to walk the trails and see the fall colors. I’ve been here before but this was the first time for my wife. We ended up taking a nice walk on the trail around Branta Pond which offered views of forests, ponds, marshes and fields, but is only a fraction of trails available in the park. Before you visit the park check out the website to make sure it is open.

This was our first time to visit to Lord Sterling Park. The Environmental Center was closedd ue to Covid 19 but we were able to walk though the park. There is a boardwalk which makes a short pleasant walk down to the pond where there is a gabizo for sitting. From there you can connect to the hiking trails which are well marked. We took the blue trail which was not too long and an easy walk. The big draw back was that since the environmental center was closed there were no restrooms

The EEC has been a fixture here for years, and I used to visit regularly when I lived nearby. My children went to a variety of their programs, and were always happy to go back. Rich Hoffman has been there for years and when we saw him this week, he has the same enthusiasm he had when my children (now in their 30s) were in grammar and middle school. Sadly the coronavirus pandemic has out a damper on their programs, but we truly enjoyed just being outside in a very special place.

My husband and I stop by the EEC for its Christmas tree display every year. Each tree has its own unique theme and each shows the amount of creativity and work that the tree’s sponsoring organization put into it. Viewing the trees is part of our holiday tradition and we highly recommend it!

The Education Center is staffed by warm, good-humored, and, in fact, quite witty and funny people. Downstairs the small but well-conceived educational center displays the varied habitats of the area and their animal denizens with excellent graphics and informational text. Beautifully crafted taxidermy specimens of a beaver, mouse, mink, a fawn, squirrel and other animals are placed in their environments. There is a very sweet area for younger children with stuffed animals for demonstration and instruction. Another area showed proper composting, and another a portrait and history of Lord Sterling, the Scottish noble whose property became the park. Outside the center an area of lawn had a small cemetery with gravestones for various extinct or soon-to-be extinct species. We followed red, green, and blue trails for a 3.1 mile walk through woods, some on raised boardwalks, past stands of trees in stages of late autumn leaflessness, including shag bark hickory. Nearby a deer leapt past, scuffling the leaf carpet. Dragonflies and birds, including a red-headed woodpecker, flitted past. This park leads one to walk, exercise, observe nature, and enjoy peaceful contemplation.

I took my 3 year old here and he was a bit young for much of the children's educational displays, so this may be better for a 4-5 year old minimum. But, we did sit and read a book in their library, he got to play with some puzzles, in the beaver's lair and owl tree in the children's area indoors. The staff was friendly, and they appear to have some fall activities planned for kids too each year.
The walking trails were nice, maps of them provided too. And, they were well labeled so you knew which colored path you were on.

Is there maple syrup tapping for classes. We are a school and we think we were there several years ago and found it a great tip and informative.
