Frederick Church's beautiful estate overlooking the Hudson River. The grounds are spectacular regardless of the season, but most special in autumn when the garden is in bloom and the leaves on the trees have changed colors. There is a small parking lot and plenty of trails. Entrance to the grounds is free.

Thank you for your review. The landscape is always free and open to explore from 8am- sunset. There is now a new Visitor Center, the Frederic Church Center for Art and Landscape, located just inside the entrance with parking, facilities, and a water bottle filling station. We hope you will visit again soon.

Fantastic tour with our guide Nordika. She was very informative and friendly. I have been wanting to check this place out for 24 years! It certainly didn't disappoint. Get there early for a good parking spot as they fill up FAST. A great NY treasure!

This was our first stop on our Road Trip after leaving New York. It's a very comfortable place to visit - lots to see in the house. Due to our timing we couldn't guarantee arriving in time for the guided tour of the house so we booked a self-guided tour instead. This was fine, all of the rooms had people willing to give lots of information and insight into the house and its belongings.
The rooms are as furnished by the owner from his travels. He seems to have collected whatever took his fancy, there's no real theme linking things but this is not a problem. Most things are well worth a look. Some of his paintings are displayed.
All the staff and volunteers we met there were friendly, helpful and full of information that they wished to impart.
A good start on our journey.

The mansion and grounds were beautiful. We spent a beautiful afternoon and took a self guided tour. The staff was extremely helpful in explaining what they know about the rooms and the history of the mansion. We took a walk around the grounds and enjoyed the amazing views along with the flower garden. I would certainly recommend this mansion and am looking forward to coming back one day.

Certainly very interesting - Moorish interpretation of a basically Italianate Victorian with over the top interior rooms (but in the 'artistic' vs. 'expensive' mode: Church was well off but not gilded age wealthy). The second floor comes only with a pricey upgrade, and you can do the nature walk yourself - certainly don't need a guide for that. Essentially then it adds a few rooms on the second story and some additional commentary (which is in fact well done throughout) - as well as a 'special exhibit' that really wasn't. Take your pick, but it's expensive as is. Gift shop best patronized by PBS donor ladies who have a spare hundred or two while discussing how to grow alliums. Short film does not convey much. You will not see the striking aerial views - indeed a little hard to get the whole house in a picturesque shot which is what makes the calendars.

Hi Scott. We are so sorry that the site did not meet your expectations. The bird eye views you see on some photos are drone footage, so yes, hard to get that perspective on the ground. Although folks do try! Yes the forest is very walkable and our landscape is open and free 7 days a week, 8am to sunset, although we highly recommend taking a guided landscape walk to connect Frederic Church's art and vision for the property to the main house. They work in tandem! Thank you for taking the time to write a review.

One of my favorite spots in Hudson for a calm autumn day. My favorite thing to do is bring a coffee and walk around the grounds. Make sure to bring a camera, the view is unbelievable!

Nature and history make this a beautiful and interesting place to visit. There are several different options for tours and a beautiful gift shop. I recommend going Monday- Wednesday because there’s not much open in Hudson early in the week. It’s truly beautiful and peaceful.

Hello, we appreciate you taking the time to write a review. Just a clarification, on Mondays, the State Park is open (7 days/ week, 8am-sunset), but the house tours take place Tues- Sunday for our summer season. Glad you enjoyed your time here!

We didn't take the tour of the house due to time constraints. The grounds are open and free to wander, we around the house. The architecture is middle eastern in style with arches and mosaics. There are restrooms and a very expensive gift shop which had a short film.

If you like history, art, eclectic, and unique, then this place is a home run. Federick Church bought this land and not only was the architect of this home but the surrounding landscape. The views of the Hudson River Valley were spectacular, and the house is something out of Alice in Wonderland. A must stop if you are in this area.

We did the first floor tour and were very content with all we saw. The furnishings and decor are all restored to their original, down to exact paint colors and stencils thanks to Frederick Church's cataloging all his selections to be found and duplicated. It's amazing to learn of the couples extensive travels in a time when travel was exceedingly more difficult than it is today - speaks to their curiosity and sense of wanderlust. Lucky us that they chose to embrace distance cultures and create such an intriguing property. Though it may not be the popular minimalist style so widely embraced today, the sheer volume of art, and artifacts, displayed makes for a cozy, intellectual haven that is a delight to the eye.

Update June 2019: we have just finished a large improvement project to our handicapped accessibility access which is better than before.

There is an entrance fee that is tied to the tour guide. If you just wish to walk the grounds, you don't need to pay a fee. But, if you want to go inside the house, you do. As recommended by someone, the website will advise the cost for the tour guide/entry into the house.

Don't know of any restaurant on site I have always opted for throwing a blanket down for a perfectly exquisite romantic picnic & brought my own food

And this is from Olana's website: Olana is the home, studio and designed landscape of Hudson River School artist Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900) and his family. The 250 acre historic estate features a Persian-inspired mansion filled with original sketches, studies and paintings by Church.

This is an absolutely lovely place to visit if you are in the Hudson River Valley. The artifacts in the house are interesting and will give you a glance into an interesting lifestyle. Frederic Church was a student of Thomas Cole's.
