On our tour of the Hudson River Valley we naturally stopped at Hyde Park, .which in turn led to Wilderstein. Unfortunately the mansion is far from completely renovated and what is highlighted in the docent tour is the grandiosity of the building and furnishings, not the history of Daisy - without which the it would be just one more big, old building and an example of fortunes gained and lost. A short video preview is helpful, but the connection to FDR, and the reason the place is worth mentioning at all, is minimal.

Having been too early in the season for a tour, during our Spring visit to the Hudson River Valley; we were able to experience this interesting historical site, on our return August stay.
The onsite staff were friendly, welcoming and informative. The opening introductory film provided a nice beginning orientation.
Our tour guide, Joe, was knowledgeable and accommodating (especially with our need to sit from time-to-time; as well as in answering questions).
The history of the site was engaging; and for those who are appreciative of the Victorian aesthetic, as we are, this structure and its contents are quite appealing. (Our only regret was the inability to take indoor pictures. Though we purchased some postcards, and a book which included some interior photos; this did not do justice to the detail and craftmanship within.)
After the tour, we spent more than 1 1/2 hours sitting on the porch and lawn bench; enjoying the wonderful River views and uncharacteristically cool August breeze.
All and all; a very pleasant way to spend the afternoon.

I got to Wilderstein too late for a tour but I was able to tour the grounds on a late summer day. The views of the Hudson River were just breathtaking and everything was in bloom. Even the wildflowers in the fields were amazing.

If you miss seeing the house tour take about an hour out and walk around the house. You will get the most spectacular pictures.

Tours run every hour starting at noon. They don’t tell you on the website that these tours sell out. We arrived at 12:30 hoping to get on a 1 pm tour. There were 3 cars in the parking lot including ours. We were told that the 1 pm tour was sold out and that we would have to wait for the 2 pm tour. Maybe selling tickets online in advance and warning that tours were very small and likely to sell out would be a good idea.

These old homes are so interesting to visit. The historical groups do such a good job at maintaining them and trying to preserve their original style and furnishings. We enjoyed a short tour of only the first floor and it was such a hot day we were given a discount on the ticket price though I don't think anything on the "express" tour was eliminated. The only problem was it was SO hot with no air conditioning.....maybe just a few fans.....that I opted to just sit on the breezy porch and missed a few of the rooms. The groups just didn't fit well into the tiny viewing area and the tour guide was very detailed in his talk.....I thought I would pass out! So come on a cooler day!

We visited on a Wednesday knowing the grounds would be open, but the house closed. My hope was to have access to the house exterior and that worked out well. After taking the trail to the marsh, petroglyph (unable to see despite close inspection of the 2 large rocks at the site) and railroad tracks we headed to the house, walked around, and then enjoyed a long sit on the porch looking out to the Hudson. We had the entire place to ourselves!

After living 45+ years in the Hudson Valley I finally visited Wilderstein! And boy was it worth the wait. First of all, the story of the family is fascinating, especially that the last family member to live there (until 1991, when she was in her 90s) had been born in the house and was a distant cousin and superclose friend to her down-the-road-a-piece neighbor, FDR.
Our tour was led by Brenda, one of the excellent, devoted volunteers on the site. We were thrilled at the amount and quality of work that has gone into the renovations of the magnificent building, which in a way still feels very much like a home (especially the little kitchen, aka butler's pantry, which has been left exactly as it was when Margaret "Daisy" Suckey died, six months before her 100th birthday).
The views of the Hudson are fabulous, the grounds are lovely, sitting on the big, wide front porch in a rocking chair while a breeze wafted over us was pure heaven!

Delightful and interesting tour given by knowledgeable guides. Provides a clear view into the fascinating gilded age and the opulence and excess the business titans enjoyed. History comes to life.

This unique Victorian home was built by the Suckleys. Its last resident was Daisy Suckley, a very close friend of FDR. The home has been extensively refurbished to its original condition. The only way to get inside is via a guided tour. The extensive grounds also offer walking trails.

Great example of craftsmanship. The detail in every room is exquisite, from the Tiffany stained glass windows, to the woodwork and fireplace mantles to the hand tooled leather wall coverings and handpainted ceiling paper. The grounds were beautiful as well. It was beginning to rain the day I visited, otherwise I would have loved to walk around and see the landscaping, views, and outbuildings.
