I took my two granddaughters on Friday 6th as I was babysitting during an inset day.
It was brilliant. They both had an amazing time. The 8 year old took lots of pics as she is studying the Stone Age, and I had to drag the 4 year old on from all the interactive activities.
So much has changed for museums now. I remember clearly, as a child ( 1960s) vaguely gazing at endless boring glass cases. My parents were both headteachers and I’m sure they saw this as an extension to my education. Sadly, I learned very little from these visits.
Both my granddaughters were thrilled with our day out and I’ve recommended the museum to other parents.
Keep up the great work. Loved it.

Visited as part of our Arts Society group (combined with visit to the associated Warner Textile Archive). Can't fault anything about our day. All staff knowledgeable, helpful and work as a team. The Archive is worth a visit on it's own (check to see when you can visit). Fabulous fabrics, and informative history.
Museum hosts exhibitions throughout the year. The shop was very highly rated by our group - an exception to many museum / gallery shops.
Entrance fees very reasonable. Museum very close to town centre, and combines many facets of the town's / area's history - all in a beautifully maintained old school building. If you are anywhere near Braintree it really is a "must" visit.

Local museums can often be a bit "worthy but dull", but this one completely exceeded my expectations. Partly this was due to the excellent exhibition on Courtaulds, who were the main local employer until early 1890s, serious art collectors (especially of Impressionist paintings), and generous, enlightened philanthropists.

I also discovered, however, that Braintree has a far more interesting history than I'd thought, it was something of a centre of religious nonconformity in the 17th & 18th century, partly due to Courtaulds, who were Calvinist Huguenots, but also from a 17th century influx of Flemish immigrants mostly working in the cloth trades.

Dozens of Braintree residents emigrated to the USA in the 18th century, one of whom was the father of John Adams & grandfather of John Quincy Adams. There are towns called Braintree in both Massachusetts and Vermont

Unfortunately, due to Covid, the Victorian Classroom and John Ray Gallery were closed, but hopefully they will reopen in 2021

after 21 years living in Braintree I finally got around to paying a visit to this museuem. My big mistake. Its full of local knowledge, facts and significant interests - I have only just learnt that a B17 came down on the Convent and that a memeorial had been errected. Its a must do for all locals to se ehow the town has been established through benefactors in recent history

Lovely small museum set in a old school, it was Very friendly and quiet meaning we didn’t feel rushed to look at things and had lots of time to explore the museum with only a few other people around. The museum was very clean and tidy and lots of room for wheelchair or prams to get around.
It isn’t very big which is perfect for younger children as they didn’t get bored which is my worry about taking them to larger museums. There’s also a lot of the children to interact with so instead of telling them they can’t touch everything there was lots they could touch such things including dressing up and sorting, puzzles etc
They staff were very friendly and welcoming,
The prices are reasonable.
My favourite was the Victorian classroom.

We spend 2 hours going round this redbrick former school building in central Braintree. There was plenty to look at, to read and to listen to. There are plenty of interesting people with a link to Braintree, such as arctic explorers, artists, the Courtauld family. We also enjoyed the small dinosaur exhibition.

This was an interesting local Museum with interesting part to I enjoy learning about John ray and about certain local family however where is struggle with this place was lack of a clear narrative connecting up Braintree story in time I felt was jumping all over the place, this is a shame after all I do live here now.

The exhibition was good but the experience was made by the staff. So helpful and very enthusiastic about their museum. Lots of things in the shop to buy. Will go back just to buy cards and paper.

Have visited twice for special exhibitions and will definitely go again. Exhibitions are small, just the right size not to get overwhelmed, and it's usually lovely and quiet, so you really have the time and space to enjoy it. The gift shop has lots of pretty items and I bought several presents there - a refreshing change from high street chains. Well worth checking out.

Many local museums are a bit dire, we have all seen the sugar cone and the beet chopper and don't want to pay to see another. Braintree museum is well above this level. There is an excellent shop with a good range of gifts, souvenirs, specialist books, art and pocket money toys. The permanent displays are lively with plenty of attention to the artifacts and not too much to tell us about the history of the world unless its utterly relevant to Braintree. Braintree has a seriously industrial heritage which has now gone but the museum records it well. There is a good focus on well known names, such as Courtauld and Crittall. The school room is not over tidied and really takes you back in a slightly scary way (I did not like school at all). There are sufficient hands on things for children including some good dressing up stuff. The Matisse cut outs exhibition was on during my visit and that was a great highlight, watch out for whats on and time your visit if you can to fit in one of the talks. It was heartening to see how many schools had engaged with the Matisse and childrens' work was on display with not a hint of condescension.
