Visited today to kill some time on a rainy day and were b.8wn away by how fascinating the tour of the house was. Tour guide Tom was phenomenal. I've got to admit, I never knew or cared about James Buchanan before, but the tour was so informative and the home is so well preserved and restored. Highly recommend a visit.

I recently brought a group of ladies to YULETIDE at WHEATLAND. We were treated to an incredible tour by a man dressed in period clothing, who was so knowledgeable about the house, the furnishings, and President Buchanan and his family. We were absolutely spell bound.

My self my Mom and my cousin were on a girls Getaway and went to visit this house the staff were very friendly and the lady who was our guide through the house was wonderful and very knowledgeable . Would recommend this tour to everyone

Last minute addition to our travel plan and so glad we added it. Great tour with tour guide Ardith (loved her!) who was portraying Buchanan's niece Harriet Lane. Learned and saw so much, definitely worth a stop.

Our tour of President James Buchanan’s house started with a short film about him in the Lancaster History Center. Following the film we took a very interesting tour of the first and 2nd floors of the house. His “Wheatland” house, a National Historic Landmark, is located behind the History Center. The brick home was constructed in 1828; Buchanan acquired it in 1848 and lived there for about 20 years, except for his four years in the Whitehouse.
We had an excellent tour guide, dressed in period clothing. She was very knowable about the history of the house and about Mr. Buchanan and his family members that lived there. The film and house tour were scheduled to last a total of one hour. But, the house tour itself was about one hour, which we did not mind as our tour guide made it a very enjoyable and interesting experience.
We did not know much about the 15th President before our visit, but learned a lot during the tour and film. He apparently was an effective stateman as Secretary of State and an ambassador in Europe, but ineffective as President leading up to the start of the Civil War.

The tour starts with a 20 minute short film about President Buchanan's early days. The film eludes on his sexuality which is not supported by factual events. And why is this important? The tour lasts about 1 hour. The gentleman had great familiarity with the house, artifacts, President Buchanan and family members in the household. We found it interesting about the outbreak of dysentery at the National Hotel on the eve of his inauguration. We didn't know much about President Buchanan prior to visit but left having some knowledge. Ample parking. Restrooms located at the Lancaster Historical Center. Be sure to walk through the exhibits at the Historical Center where your tour begins.

The tour of Wheatland was really interesting. The tour guide was excellent and dressed like Buchanan. He had extensive knowledge of Wheatland and Buchanan. The tour was well worth it. The movie in the visitor center was not so great. It brought up Buchanan's sexuality several times which we did not feel was necessary. More information on his early life would be an improvement.

The film that is shown first is very informative- about 25 min. Then there is a short walk to the house. We were greeted by the tour guide who was dressed in period clothes. It was supposed to be a 45 min to 1 hr tour. This tour was about 1.25+ hrs. We had to sneak out before the end of the tour because we had to be at our next stop! The guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining.

I prefer not to use Pay Pal so if I check open tour spots, and then come over (I'm local) well ahead of the tour time, can I buy 2 tickets there.
Would have booked but we had previous problems with Pay Pal so we won't use them.

Hello! I am a representative of LancasterHistory,org. Please see my answers below to your questions.
1. What days are they open and what hours between now and the end of December?
The main building at LancasterHistory,org is open Monday - Saturday from 9:30am - 5pm barring Federal holidays. For tours of Wheatland, we offer two different experiences during the holidays: Wheatland History Tours and the Yuletide at Wheatland program. These times are available on our website under our "Visit" menu in "Hours of Operation."
2. How much are the tickets and can you get them there?
During the holiday season, tickets for Wheatland History Tours AND the Yuletide at Wheatland program are $12 for adults, $6 for children 6-13 years, and children 5 and under are free with a paying adult. We do offer family passes for two (2) adults and up to three (3) children ages 6-13 for $30 but you must call in to get that price. We do not offer senior discounts during the holiday season.
You can purchase tickets at the door, but, due to increased visitor traffic during the holiday season, we highly recommend you purchase them online or over the phone in advance. Walk-in tickets are not guaranteed. A link to buy online can be found on our website.
3. Is there a restaurant or café?
We do not have a restaurant. We have a small cafe that has light snacks (granola bars, chips, etc...), sodas and water, and coffee that is self-serve and all items are $1. There are many local restaurants within driving distance.
4. Also, are there places to sit during the tour for older people?
We advise all guests that may need to sit down at any point in a tour or performance to please advise the front desk associate when you arrive and to let your guide know at the start of your tour. We have folding chairs throughout the mansion that a guide can pull out for you in the event you need to sit down.
