The well known explorer, Major Thomas Mitchell, was the first white man known to have visited the area on his third expedition in 1836. A cairn commemorating his visit is located approximately 5 kilometres south of Wedderburn on the Calder Highway.
Interestingly enough there were thirty-five cairns or tablets to Mitchell were erected at Nyah West, Swan Hill, Cohuna, Mount Pyramid, Fernihurst, Wedderburn, Kanya, Stawell, Mount William, Horsham, Mount Arapiles, Miga Lake, Harrow, Coleraine, Casterton, Dartmoor, Isle of Bags, Portland, Mount Rouse, Mount Napier, Hamilton, Lake Repose, Dunkeld, Middle Creek, Mount Greenock, Mitchellstown, Nagambie, Castlemaine, Expedition Pass, Kyneton, Benalla, Wangaratta, Chiltern, Gooramadda and a public park at Natimuk (Major Mitchell Park, Mount Arapiles, Natimuk).
Similar cairns to this one cost thousands of pounds, so the assumption would be that this one cost a similar amount. It is truly astounding that so many were erected at such a great cost to our communities.
This one is on the side of the road which leaves little room to pull over if you want to have a look, but there is a track next to it that you can pull into -Monument Dr and walk back from. I can't imagine a heap of cars ever pulling over at the same time to make the small walk an option.
I always thought the biggest commemoration to Major Mitchell was naming a cocky after him...after all, you see them everywhere. :)
