Was amazing to find out a little bit more about Pochontas and lovely to see her statue at in the grounds of St.Georges church. It was however disappointing to see so much litter scattered about in the church grounds especially as there are waste bins all around.

A very nice statue of princess Pocahontas situated in St George Church. It is easy to find. Her story is very interesting. It is a must see if you are in the area.

Easy to find and not far from town center. Cool little sight to see, especially if you're into interesting historical places (or even just a Disney fan!)

Native American Princess Pocahontas was on her way back to America in 1617 when she died on board the ship off Gravesend, Kent. She was taken ashore and buried in St George’s churchyard. The people of her native Virginia presented a statue to the people of Gravesend and there were several celebration events during the 400th anniversary year of her death in 2017. It is very popular with American tourists, particularly descendants of her family.

You probably know the story of Pocahontas from the Disney films, but her real-life story is far sadder. She was the daughter of a Native American chief and in 1607 she saved the life of settler John Smith in Jamestown, Virginia when he was about to be executed by her father. She was later captured by the colonists and chose to remain with them, marrying John Rolfe and travelling with him to England in 1617 where she was presented at court to King James I.

She was about to return home when she died at Gravesend aged around 21 and was buried in St George’s Church. Her baby son also fell ill, but survived, and today many Americans claim descent from them both.

As the original wooden church was burnt down in 1727 (along with most of Gravesend), her exact resting place has been lost, but her life size, bronze statue is in the gardens outside. The story is that the statue with her outstretched palms shows her at the moment when she is coming out of her father’s house to warn the colonists that they should flee as their lives are in danger.

The statue is a replica of one in Virginia and was presented as a gift to the British people by the Governor of Virginia in 1958 following a visit by Elizabeth II.

St George’s Church is slightly out of the town centre, about 10 minutes’ walk from the Tilbury-Gravesend ferry and, in the other direction, the St George’s Shopping Centre, so slightly out of the way, but there are other things to see nearby. Of course, the statue is outside in the open and fairly exposed, so not really a rainy day ‘activity’.

The statue in the church garden, provides many photo opportunities. The story of Pocahontas resonates with many people and the manner of her death, at such a young age, is so sad.

I taught Virginia History, so when our cruise ship stopped in Dover for the day, my husband and I rented a car and drove to St. George’s Church to visit Pocahontas’s grave. She is buried in the church’s chancel, but the church was closed the day we visited. There is a statue in the churchyard and the gardens around the church building are named for her. I wish I had been able to go inside the church, but I’m glad I made the trip. FYI: Parking is in a shopping mall garage nearby.

Had a lovely day out in Gravesend - lots to see - plenty of eateries always good choice.
Useful shopping centre with all I ever need to go for.
Had photos taken with grandchildren on separate occasions - even got into the church once where Pocahontas is said to be buried in the sanctuary area.
