The moving, compelling, "Echoes of Slavery in Greenbrier County" exhibit makes this a "must see" stop in Lewisburg. We've visited numerous county, town, historical society museums throughout Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia, but this exhibit makes the Greenbrier Historical Society's museum stand out among all of them. This very compact yet sensitively curated display includes some must-be-remembered-not-be-forgotten artifacts, includes newspaper advertisements from slave traders and owners, including owners offering bounties for escaped slaves. It then records highlights and lowlights of reconstruction, the Jim Crow era, and the Civil Rights era. If time doesn't permit your paying an in-person visit, you can view the exhibit on-line at the website of the Greenbrier Historical Society. I visited this museum and submitted a review in October 2016. It was a pleasant tour, but when I visited the bookstore I discovered a racist screed, which, among other things, claimed that African American slaves enjoyed their forced servitude and that the Yankees ruined their antebellum bliss. I was angered that a so-called museum could promote such racist trash. I was in the area this month, so I thought I'd revisit this museum and check on any progress. All I can say is "Wow!" They actually tore out that bookstore and replaced it with a room dedicated to the true African American experience from slavery through the 20th century. It specifically addresses the garbage I read in that book and so much more. They truly go out of their way to describe the true slave experience, honor their contributions to this country, and name some of the brave people who were able to persevere through those dark times in our history. I give this museum tremendous credit for rising above its past to becoming a truly educational and inspiring experience.

Stopped in here as had one time left over after perusing Main Street. Caught a tour with docent who narrated information on contents of each room traversed as we walked through home. Museum is rich in local artifacts and history to enable one to relate to the daily lives of those who lived in this region. Slavery, civil war & its effects on the region are apart of the displays & presentation. Tour was only about an hour & delivered the right amount of information to avoid being overloaded when walking out. $5.00 donation requested for each person who tours museum. Recommend a top here if want to take in a better understanding of the history associated with the Lewisburg area.

By all means, take the docent-let tour. We learned a great deal about the history of the house and its owners, and about the larger community of Lewisburg. Plus, there were numerous insights into influential people from the area and important local events. The breadth of history that this one house and one small town have experienced is remarkable. The work that the Historical Society has done shows through in the well-researched and presented exhibits and the deep knowledge presented by the docent. A truly remarkable example of local history put into the larger regional and national context.

Went there years ago and everything has changed. More displays, more to learn. Focus on slavery. Less about the antiques and less about the way of life of the former owners which is what I remembered from before.

We visited this previously unbeknownst to us Antebellum Home on this, our initial visit to Lewisburg WV. Home is also headquarters for the Greenbriar Historical Society. Tours are a nominal $5.00 per person. We had the good fortune of having Cassidy as our guide. She brought the home and history to life with a passion you don’t always receive during historical tours. Multiple eclectic wonders within these walls. We’ve done many house tours across the country, This was one of the best...Highly Recommended!

Very well preserved and authentic tavern. Great museum of Black History as well. This is the hometown of Katherine Johnson. Loved reading all the history. Upstairs are three bedrooms. There is a fantastic conestoga wagon on display in a side building. This was the end of the Allegheny here and the beginning of the the frontier and Indian territories.

We got a personal guided tour (it was slow that day) though the North House, home to one of the five oldest quilts in the country, from ~1760, and the colors are still vibrant.
And all of this just about an hour from where we live.

Visited the museum for the first time while in Lewisburg. Very well done museum representing both the house period and Lewisburg's history. There are additional new sections coming to the museum later this year. Please visit the home and museum if you are in town, you will learn a lot and enjoy the exhibits.

Arrived earlier than we had scheduled. The lady (I think her name is Debbie) greeted us warmly and was very flexible to let us start the tour earlier. She guided us through the whole house and was very knowledgeable. Definitely a great place for local history! Also the house was beautiful and maintained very well! Parking behind the house is quite convenient.

The Greenbrier Historical Society and North House Museum are open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. There is no charge to visit; however, donations are greatly appreciated by the volunteers who keep it alive.
