Always enjoy coming to Sotheby's and checking out the exhibits. This past weekend was a little off-putting, however, because we had a strange interaction with an employee that was working the retail level on the ground floor (the area with all the handbags). My daughter was looking at a carry-on case and barely touched it when a sales woman marched over and barked that we should ask for help (there are no "do not touch" signs anywhere, FYI). This "lady" also was quick to tell us that the price of the bag was $20K; the subtext of course being that she presumed we couldn't afford it. So bizarre and so unlike the other professionals that work at Sotheby's. I guess there's a bad apple in every bunch, so I won't dock Sotheby's for this one unpleasant person. I'm sure she won't last long.

Sotheby's has several auctions a week out of their NYC space and the public can look the art and jewelry over to see if they want to become bidders, all for free. I looked at three lots, all of which were interesting. The first was modern art, including some names you know, such as Andy Warhol. The second lot was of mostly large aboriginal painting from Australasia. They largely dated from the 1960s to the 1980s and were excellent to see up close. However, the best to view was the jewelry. They have everything polished up and shown under perfect lighting, with every facet just poppin'. There was a lot of it and it was impressively large. The only downside is that you probably can't afford it and it will never look quite as brilliant again. There was a ton of security in the jewelry area, so probably not for you if you don't like armed guards. Of course, this week they could be auctioning American masters, Chinese porcelain or even rare cars. If you look on their website, you can probably figure out what you can see for free. I found it fun. (Oh - and there is a cafe downstairs.)

The walk from 48th Street 8th Avenue to 71st Street York Avenue was an urban experience followed by the eye opener to the art world.... the Sotheby’s Headquarters in New York...a visit for art connoisseurs..

Depending on the timing of different types of work being auctioned, this is a special way to view works of art. Check the web site for exhibitions of future auctions before you go. Public is welcome to view in most cases. Easy access by bus!

大きなオークション前の1週間はビューイングといって、品定め期間の展示となります。このビューイングは招待状など、特別なものは必要なく普通に無料で誰でも入ることができます。本気で品定めをする雲の上の人達の様子も社会勉強として楽しみつつ、美術館のように楽しめます。作品の中には、突如として出現した行方不明の作品や、個人所有で観ることの出来なかったものなど、レアな作品に出会えたりします。
絵画鑑賞を楽しんだ後は、ゴシップガールファンにも人気のサンアンブローズのカフェの併設もあるので、そちらで鑑賞の余韻に浸るのも楽しみです。1階ではワインを購入することもできます。サザビーズエチケットのシャンパンも比較的安価で購入でき、プレゼントにも喜ばれます。

Terrible experience, would not recommend or do business with them again! They are not a customer focused company—so if you want to be treated like an ugly stepchild go ahead and do business with them!

Went to see Chatsworth Treasures exhibition and was very interesting: wonderfully assembled with a nice insight of the life of the Devonshire family.
From the most unusual pieces a beautiful statue that the Devonshire have commissioned for the gardens..,mesmerising (photo included).
Interesting choices of objects and interesting “stories” including the fact that selling few drawings they have managed to “gather” $ 60 million plus to maintain the property...also the rich have problems! Next door was the selling exhibition Inspired by Chatsworth that is not an auction exhibition but a fixed sale one where you can buy pieces worth of a house like Chatsworth: frankly the Canaletto was striking beautiful, price upon request, my credit card didn’t have enough...erm...credit!

Visiting Sotheby's is like a visit to an art museum. There are Asia week auctions
twice a year that feature amazing Chinese paintings, porcelain, calligraphy,
and statues. We also saw some lectures and reception parties this week,
that were really interesting, and learned about items in the auction and their owners.

If you like French wine this is a chance to sample a huge selection of the 2015 Vintage and added treat is the selection of Sauternes and a Champagne station. Also good food and this year a great band.
