Very nice facility and the staff was very pleasant and helpful. We were there about 2 hours including the time for our picnic lunch. We toured the main visitor center and also the educational center which is about 1/2 mile away. Did not visit the schoolhouse that was 1/4 mile from the educational center. The 20 minute movie was interesting and well worth the time.
I highly recommend visiting, especially for those with a farm background who have ancestors that homesteaded.

What a hidden gem! This National Historical Park is worth a detour. We spent about 1 1/4 hours there, but could easily have spent longer had we not had to catch a plane. On arrival we found few cars in the lot, but enjoyed walking past the display of states that showed what percentage of land had been distributed by the 1862 Homestead Act. It was far more widespread than we had thought. A ranger welcomed us and gave us a pamphlet, and another explained the history of the center and the park, and started the informational introductory video for us. (Don’t miss it: we learned a lot about homesteading—including the fact that it lasted until the 1970s in the lower 48, and 1986 in Alaska—but also found the film gave both the homesteader side and, importantly, the Native American view. Well done). The exhibits downstairs (elevator available if you need one) gave a lot of interesting stories about how homesteaders made it. We didn’t realize that most homesteaders failed; only about 40 percent settled the land, farmed and lived there for five years, the requirement to get the patent for the land. There are great recorded stories told by descendants of homesteaders and by the Native Americans that they displaced. And you can see how, through this act, the settlement of nearly 60 percent of the United States was affected, how small town America grew, and how communities were formed. We had never heard of the park before seeing a brochure at another Nebraska NPS site (Scotts Bluff, see separate review). We are so glad we visited, and are grateful to the staff, particularly Amber (sorry if got the name wrong) who lives in nearby Beatrice (which we learned is pronounced with a hard. “A”.). All in all, an excellent experience.

I really like this site. The Homestead act went on for such a long time and was crucial in shaping our country. Exhibits and movie are a must see if you’re in the area.

We stopped here on a whim on a way home from a weekend getaway. We ended up spending two enjoyable hours. The movie and educational talk were a great addition to the static displays.

I was anxious to see this site and was not disappointed. The vistor center is fabulous. It contains a wonderful film and a great museum. Each of the three sites that comprise Homestead are connected by trails. It was inspiring to walk the trails that allow access to some of the last tall grass prairies. The entire site was impressive.

The inside information center was very nice. One of the rangers on duty assisted us in using the computers there where you could look up a family name and see if they had been homesteaders. That was fun and yes we did find some. The outside trails were lovely to walk and informative. We also liked the ability to use your cellphone to hear some of the informative historical information using our phone. Great day.

It may be off the beaten path, but this national historical park is well worth your time and effort to get here. The new visitor center is exquisitely designed and houses creative, informative exhibits to explain the Homestead Act in detail. Do not miss the 22 minute video, an outstanding work which includes both Native American and white settler perspectives on impacts of the Act starting in the 1860s. I loved the fact this park is located on the very first US homestead claim made in 1865-66, and exhibits also include details of the very last homestead in the US, in Alaska, claimed in the 1970s. This is real American history, told accurately and completely and we enjoyed our visit immensely. Not to forget, park personnel were excellent. We visited in March and weather was not good to walk the trails but they looked wonderful, for better weather days. I was proud to stamp my National Parks Passport at this wonderful site. Well done!

If you don't know anything about the Homestead Act, you will learn all about it here. However, the museum never explained that the location of the park was there because it was the first claim filed under the Homestead Act. I finally figured this out, but I think this was a key fact that the park museum failed to point out.

First- the story of why this park is here is fascinating- the site of the first claim of 160 acres if one homesteads it is here.
Combine that with a beautiful visitors center- great exhibits and enthusiastic rangers and you have a great national park property to visit

Yes, and there are a lot of sign boards and displays. There are sign boards about the homestead act and its consequences. I remember there is a very good extensive display about the flowers and plants of the area. Of course, if the visitor center is open - there is much more inside. I learned a lot and enjoyed my trip to the Homestead National Monument, so I plan to go back bringing my wife when she retires within a few years.
