This walk is, perhaps, most interesting for people with a bit of an interest in geology and/or chemistry. As it is at high altitude, the patches of native bush come and go, you go through an interesting wetland, and I enjoyed reading the explanatory panels that the Department of Conservation put up. There is quite a lot of tussock - but there, you are at about 1100 - 1300m above sea level, and only the hardiest of plants survive.
You will see the Golden Rapids in the bed of the Whakapapanui Stream en route, made of iron, and the Silica Rapids themselves - in the bed of the Waikare Stream - are of aluminium. Again, helpful signs talk about how this happens, and I think that's a great thing - you're looking at some thick, cream coloured deposits on rocks, which is not especially interesting until you know the story behind it - that silicates and aluminium leach from the old lava flow at the head of the valley. Similarly, the Whakapapanui Stream is rich in iron from the rocks along its own valley. It was a bit to ponder during the walk.

Я не ожидал, что эта природная достопримечательность меня настолько поразит. Очень необычное место. По дороге можно увидеть красные и белые отложения в ручье, а также прочитать, почему так происходит.

An easy walk with the family. When the mountain is closed for skiing and boarding this is a perfect walk. You can often find pockets of untouched snow and the views of the mountain can be photo perfect. Can be walked comfortably faster than DOC recommends. Take food and water with you.

Really nice walk - go for the hike but don’t expect too much of the rapids. I did the 2hr return track - beautiful walk mostly in the shade ( great fir a 30 degrees day). The information along the way was very interesting ( for me ☺️). Rapids were nice.

We decided to walk the Silica rapids track (approx 1.15) and we weren't disappointed with any part of it. the track is very well maintained and when you get to the Silica Raids area you are struck with how awesome mother nature really is.

This walk takes about 2.5 hours. Starting in the beautiful cool native bush, past clear mountain streams and onto tussock areas with views of Ruapehu, Silica rapids interesting part of volcanic area.

Leaving from the Bruce road, it is a relatively easy walk to the rapids. Lots of variety in the scenery, boardwalks to protect the more fragile areas and signs to explain. The Silica rapids are very unusual in colour and well worth the walk

Great walk for beginners! Apparently it's been renovated recently and indeed the track was really good. There were quite a few boardwalks and well-maintained steps, and some signs to tell you about the local flora and fauna. I don't like climbing over rocks, or steep up and down hills, so this was the perfect walk for me. I am a nervous walker but didn't slip once. It takes about 75 minutes each way starting just up the road from the visitor's centre.
Lots of interesting things to see like the red water in the fast flowing streams, even the rocks are 'painted' red! Then the white of the silica rocks make an interesting contrast. There are many shades of red and green in the plants and trees.
