This building complex was originally owned by the noble Knight St. Burkard zu Würzburg and served as former granary and and fruit spike. Karl Ehemann was one of the first in Ochsenfurt who dared to risk the hard craft of brewing. In 1809 he founded the "Ehemannsche Brauerei" in the Kastenhof, the origin of the contemporary Kauzen Bräu. His pupil Johann Jacob Gehring from Herchsheim, a tiny rural village near Giebelstadt, had a great skill in the brewing process and was by childless Ehemann appointed as his successor. Gehring, great-great-grandfather of the current owner, bought the brewery in 1848 and led it for several decades with great skill. Today the renovated courtyard houses several shops and restaurants.
