We were a group of 6, 3adults, 2children aged 8 and 1 child aged 3. Weather when we set out was sunny and warm. The path up to the monument is good and clear. As one would expect much of it is fairly steep, especially if you are not a regular hill walker (Due to the heat, the 3yr old was carried at times but did walk up most of it). Lovely views as you near the top and these continued with views of surrounding hills at the top. Unfortunately, the weather broke with mist closing in and we lost the views but still managed to enjoy a Scottish summer picnic 😄. We returned the same way. This time the 3yr old walked all the way down. We had wondered if this walk was suitable for a young child. If you have plenty time and children are used to walking - and a pair of strong arms, just in case🤔 - this walk is a good family outing.

The steep climb is definitely worth it once you reach the top. In fact the view is more impressive than the attraction.
First off, the car park. Don't satnav the monument, satnav the carpark. It'll save you driving past it like we and many others did!
Secondly, take snacks and factor in a stop if you've got children. Our 10yo is well seasoned in hiking, but on a beautifully sunny day it can be a bit much with no shade in most parts. There's a small loch about two thirds of the way up which makes a lovely little spot to stop for a drink and a snack. Speaking of snacks... there are thousands of blueberry bushes to be enjoyed along the way.
The path is pretty mixed, varying from flat surfaces to steep rocky trails. There are a couple of forestry/farm tracks that run across the path which can sometimes be confusing as there are no sign posts. Just keep going straight and you won't go wrong.
The monument itself is pretty impressive. I thought there might be a sign explaining the history but nothing to be seen. Google to the rescue! Views are incredible.
All in all, straight up and down we covered about 7km in 2.5 hours.

Amazing view but quite a steep walk, worth going through. Lake on the way, car park close by just before you start hike.

This hill walk is worth the climb! Take a good pair of walking shoes. The path starts off fairly simple but gets steep! I'm not the fittest of people, I don't exercise regularly so I felt this a bit of a struggle until the half way point. Once over that I got a second wind and made it up no bother. Took around an hour with a small stop to a little pond on the left. Went around 18:00 (March) and there was noone else heading up. Most were coming down...some families with kids too ... Putting me to shame hah! Very peaceful at the top, and windy!

Great hike with scenic views throughout. Around an hour going straight up and down from the car park. Fairly steep climb, worth it for the views at the top.

A great short walk with fantastic views. Not sure how I feel about the history of the monument and it is odd when you get up there. It took us an hour and 20 up and down but we hillwalk so the inclines were not an issue but it is steep in places and although it is only 3km to the top it is uphill all the way.

Impressive views from the monument. Still had some snow around at the end of May. Small car park, probably worth getting there early at busy times. Lovely walk, partly forested, great views across Cromarty Firth Took two unfit people about 45 minutes each way, wear good walking shoes or boots. Supposed to based on the Gate of Negapata in India. Great walk for families

Holy hell!!! We decided to do it on the hottest day this year. 22 degrees!!! It’s akin to climbing a Munro from half way up, without the easy walk in to get you used to it…. Some bits were almost a scramble.
Make sure you wear proper shoes and take water and snacks for the top.
After our 1 hour climb we were rewarded with amazing views and we sat and relaxed in the sun for 1/2 hour before our 45 min slide back down the hill.
Was definitely worth it but don’t underestimate the effort involved.

This is a very hard walk no signage so just hope your going right way for a 52 yr old unfit mother it was a hike it almost killed me and took alternative path down which u had to find for yourself and go zig zagging through the woods using ur own judgement to get back quiet scary. Do not attempt this if ur not fit. The views are good but the walk is a killer

A good walk up through forest mostly (which I never hugely enjoy given no views) but the reward at the top with the views to Ben Wyvis covered in snow were great.
The monument itself is quite a sight too - and it has a sad history. The monument is what Hector Munro had the poor in the community build, as a reward for being fed during times of famine and hardship. There was a fear in those days that simply handing out food/aid would 'make Highlanders lazy.' (!)
There was unseasonal snow when we were there in early May but it just made the whole scene even more special. It would be good too, to stride out across the moorland for more exploration of other smaller monuments in the wider area.
Car park fills up quickly in peak season so get there early.

Is it possible to drive up to the monument for a wedding ceremony?

You can drive to the car-park. After that it's a walk that requires good strong shoes or boots in winter.

Yes it is possible - the path is pretty clear and even - although it is a long climb so it depends on your fitness levels. Assume you mean a "back pack" style in which case I do not recall any low branches or other hazards.

Hi James S,
You would probably be fine but there are some steeper sections. It's a lovely walk in itself so you could always turn back. Instead there are lots of other beautiful walks around such as the 'Monadh Mor' on the main road halfway between Tore roundabout and the Fyrish. Or nearby the Fyrish along the river.

How to I get there, I tried to find the car park on Saturday but ended up at the end of a narrow single track road. Took the Boath turn off but no signs after that??
