The museum is like the Tardis, small frontage but when you get inside it opens up to the most intesting and informative place. Two wonderful ladies Doreen and Angie welcomed us in and Angie took us on a tour. From the local inventors of the first prosthetic limbs to the studies and invention of early flight and much much more, it had everything. You MUST MUST visit. The entry fee of £5 is worth every penny. What a gem of a find. We spent 2 hours in there but could have stayed longer car parking permitted. Please go and visit, you will love it.

From the outside, the grade II listed building looks small. However, it's a tardis containing numerous exhibits. The volunteers are knowledgeable and offer guided tours which really enhance the visit. As it's a non profit making venture run by trustees, there is a charge of £5 per adult for entry but this goes towards the upkeep and is great value. A visit is highly recommended.

The museum is extensive - not just the frontage you see. Parking outside on the main street. Fantastic exhibits covering a wide range of interests about the local area. A staff member guided us round, explaining the exhibits or you could go unaccompanied.
Strongly recommended & I'm not a museum "geek".

Very beautiful museum with lovely volunteers who will tell you so much about the social history of Chard and in general of social life in previous ages. At the front the museum looks fairly small, but it extends to several buildings at the back, showing a rich collection of many themes and ages. The volunteers told so much more during the guided tour than just the written information with the items and answered my many questions. I can totally recommend to book a tour.

Having walked past Chard Museum when it was closed, we didn't think it would be all that good and decided not to visit it. Luckily (but somewhat randomly) my mum was chatting with someone at home in Sussex who had previously been and recommended it so we changed our minds and added it to our holiday itinerary.
I am so glad we did! There is so much more than meets the eye with information on interesting Chard residents such as James Gillingham and John Stringfellow, some fantastic carnival costumes, dolls houses, cider presses, forge and much more.
The volunteers were very helpful and happy to show us around, and it is also possible to book a formal guided tour via the website.
A great way to spend a couple of hours.

Lovely museum with lots of interesting features. Nice asset to the town, they do a Christmas tree decorating competition which is well supported by the local community. Nice to see it open again after lockdown

We have been visiting Chard for a number of years to see family but had never visited the museum before yesterday.
Run by a very friendly and very knowledgeable band of volunteers the museum is an absolute treasure trove of local memory.
Central to the collection is a large display detailing the achievements of five notable local people all of whom have had an impact nationally and indeed in several cases, internationally.
The rest of the is given over to an extensive and fascinating array of artefacts and mementos recalling past ways of life. Children can follow the trails to find various interesting items and a number of creatures are ‘hiding’ around the museum.
Well worth a couple of hours of your time.

A wonderful warm informative welcome. It is huge inside and gives you so much information. Well laid out.
They have lovely interactive sheets for children.

We just popped in as we were staying in the town. It was over two hours later that we finally left. So interesting and beautifully laid out. It is an extensive museum, despite what looks like a narrow entrance. So many things to see and Chard should be proud of its collections which give visitors such an insight into the town. Staffed by the most friendly and helpful volunteers. Worth every penny.
