Absolutely beautiful property to wander round - even on a grey day! Really enjoyed the kitchen gardens & staff in gift shop very welcoming & informative. We cd only do the garden tour as we left visiting until late in the afternoon. The tea shop is a bit sad, very cold & felt like I was in a boarding school hall - such a shame after wandering around such a beautiful property- well worth the visit

The gardens are amazing-both the enviable walled kitchen garden and also the parkland and the more formal gardens. I saw a kingfisher at the big pond in front of the house and a wild deer in the park (it was raining so not many visitors around). The house was interesting and the lovely lady volunteer who explained the history of the tapestries upstairs was a fantastic ambassador for Forde Abbey being warm, welcoming, interesting and fun. I think it is worth paying the extra £4 to see the house as well although there were some non-sequiturs in there like the current owner’s wedding dress. The cloister downstairs was wonderful.
I have to agree with comments about the coffee shop being very poor and very overpriced and unwelcoming. Bring a picnic and a flask and you will have a lovely day out.

We'd been looking forward to a late afternoon tea and a good shop at this beautiful place in the West Country, we've visited Forde Abbey (house and gardens) a few times before. But when I politely asked the woman in the shop if we could just visit the loo, shop and cafe on this occasion since we'd arrived too late to enjoy the extensive gardens, we were met with a brusque "No, you must buy garden tickets".
Why, with under 2 hours left would we spend £30 on garden entry if all we realistically had time for was to nip to the loo, Christmas shop, then sit down for a cream tea (ie spend money), leaving scant time to even glimpse at the garden?
Evidently not trusting that we wouldn't attempt some sort of Houdini-style 'runner', she eventually snapped that we couldn't go to the loo together, but could "go one at a time". We felt like reprimanded schoolchildren guilty before proven innocent.
We live only a county away so we like to support it - but as beautiful as Forde Abbey is, it is competing with equally impressive neighbouring estates and gardens which seem to better understand customer service.
We'd planned to stock up on Forde Abbey flyers and a dozen packets of its fudge to put in to my boyfriend's popular holiday home's 'welcome' hampers. But after this woman's rudeness we jettisoned the flyers and bought only 4 packs, knowing the same 'white label' fudge to be much cheaper in our village store, where they appreciate us supporting their local business.
As I rushed past the cafe on my permitted solo dash to the loo, I could see it wasn't busy, so it really was a shame we had to bypass tea and cake (On a previous visit, the cafe had run out of all sandwiches by 2.30!).
Another travel-weary couple who arrived in the shop after us were strong-armed by the shop woman in to buying 2 garden tickets at £30 on the basis that they (I quote her directly) "should have arrived much earlier!" despite them protesting they had driven all day to get there (they explained this twice, but she wasn't listening).
As we left the shop feeling disappointed and baffled, I could hear the understandably irate husband asking the woman why there was not a more reasonable 'late entry' fee that could be issued on a discretionary basis. I had to agree with him. Besides, ALL other gardens and stately homes I've ever visited allow no-quibble free entry in to their shop, loo and cafe! (There is a small front gate at Forde Abbey which would easily facilitate this directly from the carpark without the need to enter any garden, why didn't they guide us through there? Very odd since walking through the garden felt longer and more complex).
I noted the quality of the shop's gifts has declined since our last visit, and many items were made in China, sadly. We left disgruntled that the place didn't give a hoot about the customer, just about their coffers.
I suppose we'll just Christmas shop at local estate Christmas fairs next month, where they sell quality locally-sourced fare and where we know our custom will be met with good cheer.

We visited early October and were amazed at the amount of colour still in the gardens. Lots to wander around and enjoy.

The gardens at Forde Abbey were delightful to wander round in the late autumn sunshine. The herbaceous beds were still beautiful. We particularly enjoyed the kitchen garden with the range of produce , the pumpkins and squash , cabbages all looking big and hearty. If only I had space to grow them in my city garden. The fountain was great fun to see as well.
We enjoyed visiting the house , the lady in the entrance hall was very helpful in telling us some information about the house. I particularly liked being able to walk around in the rooms , even though they are carpeted, my local NT property has rope barriers in the doorways so you simply peer into the room.
We also went into the tea room which was large and airy . I must say I had a most delicious pasty with light pastry - almost flaky - thank to whoever made it , I really appreciated it!

We had a lovely time visiting Forde Abbey. The house and gardens are beautiful and the people working there were all friendly and helpful.
It's so special that it's still a family home

There were a lot of visitors, but the garden was so big, that you could still have a quiet stroll around. The abbey itself was a grand place to visit. Loved it !

First time here just for the gardens. Lovely perennial borders, well manicured lawns and views. The spiral garden was particularly well thought out. Had some lunch here usual fare of sandwiches and jacket potatoes, plenty of room inside and outside. As others have said, plan the route carefully otherwise you might get stuck down narrow lanes.

I wasn't sure from the information. Totally blown away. Well worth the entrance fee absolutely stunning. The gardens still beautifully manicured even though it was the end of the season. The walled vegetable garden fantastic. I saw so many plants I didn't recognize. Very peaceful, the cafe well priced. I wouldn't recommend for bouncy children unless they like history.
Only issue don't follow the sat nav the drive was scary some roads no bigger than a bridle way. Ring them or drive to Chard and recalculate definitely pick up the directions to get back from reception so grateful for them.

Being a Monday with the house closed to visitors there was still plenty do do exploring the various gardens and viewing the magnificent house from the gardens. Beautiful flowers, flora and two lakes available to be seen, a photographer’s paradise with vibrant colours throughout the estate. Twice a day a impressive fountain is activated on one of the lakes which reaches very a very impressive height. The whole site is well maintained including grass areas and lawns. I have been to many such places throughout the UK, this is one of the impressive.
