Wow, packed with so many fascinating exhibits, with all the information to go with them. So much more than we expected. Grandparents and Grandson most impressed. Highly recommend a visit.

What an amazing museum! Truly one of a kind given the sheer volume of artefacts they have. What really made the visit special was the gentleman who welcomed us and talked to us about some of the exhibits. His knowledge was mind blowing - there literally wasn't anything he didn't know about militaria past and present. He was fascinating to listen to and brought the whole experience to life.

A small quirky but fascinating museum. Every time I thought I'd seen it all I found another corner with interesting stuff. Exbibits range from historic to modern. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. You need to park on street but wasn't a problem when I went.

Thank you for your review - we do have 2 car parks but they can get quite full up during busy days in the school holidays. I hope you will come again.

Absolutely first rate. Huge amount of fascinating material across all periods, something for everyone. The spy and SOE sections particularly good but all of it fantastic with some very unusual treats throughout. It's not just weapons and militaria, plenty for the general visitor as well as specialist.
All the team at the museum were brilliant - helpful, knowledgable and enthusiastic.
All in definitely value for money and a real gem worth travelling for.

Visited first in 2014 and again on Wednesday 28th Feb 2024. The first visit was with my family and the last with a friend. In the intervening 10 years it hadn't really changed at all, but that was no bad thing. It is an Aladdin's cave of military artefacts dating back centuries, inc original uniforms. 2 of the most stunning exhibits are formed from the gun collection donated by the army and that of the spy and his wife who have supplied their personal collection of documents, devices/tools/weapons and uniforms along with the stories that go with them from their time as a spy during the cold war and before as a Nazi hunter. Manned by knowledgeable people, this is the best collection of military equipment I have ever visited and far better than those in government/national museum control. Worth a visit any day.

One of the best military museums I have been in. This is a comparatively small museum, however it is spread over three floors. It is packed with military weaponry and equipment from the middle ages to present day. The displays are expertly laid out with considerable attention to detail. Every exhibit has an individual explanation card. I went from bottom to top and it took me 4 hours. Don't miss the Capt Peter Mason section dubbed the real James Bond and the extensive Donnington firearms collection. NB There is no canteen facilities only a coffee machine. However you are within walking distance of Costa and Greggs!

Visited in January with my daughter and her partner. Would recommend a visit. The items on display are very interesting and the information very informative.
The spy gadget section was particularly impressive. James Bond is not as fictional as you may think.
The lady on reception (sorry didn't get your name) was very friendly and took time to explain about the museum and the exhibits.
If your curious about military history you must visit, I will be revisiting with my wife soon.

What an amazing place. My husband and 1 visited the museum expecting to be in there about an hour. 3 hours later and there was still lots to see. The size of the place is deceptive as it is spread over 3 floors, all jam packed full of exhibits from hundreds of years ago to the present day. Everything is displayed superbly and there is so much information available. The staff are fantastic and so knowledgeable if you need to ask any questions. It was our first visit, but will definitely be back!!

The museum is situated around half a mile from the centre of Maldon on the other side of the River Chelmer.
It contains a vast collection of various types of military equipment throughout the ages from the English Civil War to present day.
Lots of uniforms and weapons on show as well.
I particularly liked the story of the baby in a nearby village named Zeppelina after an unsuccessful raid by one of those airships during World War I.
There was a very informative portrayal of Operation Frankton from the 1942 World War II mission by the Cockleshell Heroes who bravely attached limpet mines to German craft in the Gironde estuary near Bordeaux.
I enjoyed the espionage section with a Soviet map of Essex complete with place names in Cyrillic.
I spent a most pleasant couple of hours here and learned much about conflicts throughout the ages.
Admission fee is £9.50 and concessions for those over 65 is £8.50.
The staff were most helpful and very pleasant too.

Eight of us all former Junior Leaders in the army visited as part of our reunion. On arrival we were welcomed and given an overview of the museum.
The museum is well laid out, spotlessly clean and a fantastic collection of items to view. We were absorbed by what was there our visit lasted 2 and a 1/2 hours.
The small arms collection was second to none with some vary rare and specialised weapons on show. The uniforms and indeed all of the collection were well displayed and labelled with some great background.
The shop has a nice offer of books and merchandise.
If you are in Essex or Suffolk this is a great place for a trip out to and if on holiday in the local area an absolute must.
The staff were helpful, knew their stuff and friendly.

Hi, thank you for your enquiry. We are open every day, 10.30 - 5pm (last entry 4pm, suring school holidays and Wednesday to Sunday in term time. You do not need to book, you can just turn up. We do ask over 11s to wear masks and you will need to leave details for Track and Trace.

Is this more for adults or older children? I have two autistic children aged 7 and 11, one of whom has ADHD as well so trying to choose carefully the right places to take them

Sorry to take so long to respond. I've only just noticed the question. There's lots there for children of that age, in my view. Uniforms, guns and some really interesting equipment. I think they'd be interested and engaged. Staff are friendly and helpful too, not stuffy or intimidating.

It is just opposite the roundabout from Tesco and it's under £5 for adults they do discounted rates for students and concessions/senior citizens but not sure exact amount, they do have a website though.

The best way would be take the A12 and come off at Witham. Follow signs to Maldon and you will see the brown sign for our museum on the first exit off the roundabout with Lidl on the corner (Station Road).
