Just bought a Rangemaster cooker from Yates. This took several visits and a lot of thinking. The staff were very helpful, pleasant and patient. There was no hard sell. The delivery all went according to plan without any fuss. Yates is a great shop and I strongly recommend them.

Perhaps it’s an age thing, but I love browsing in hardware shops and this one in Malton (down by the station) is as good as it gets.
Actually, by describing it as a hardware shop I’m doing it a disservice, as it is much more than that, and the title of Country Store as used by a previous reviewer is perhaps more accurate.
The style and layout is decidedly old-fashioned and perfectly chaotic, with little rooms and sections all over the place, which makes browsing all the more enjoyable.
Oh - and when you actually buy something, the staff are very knowledgeable and helpful.

This shop just about has it all. Well, it doesn’t do frozen food but it sells almost everything else. I’ve bought nails by the weight in brown paper bags, surveyed huge cookers and browsed for ages among a huge array of socks. Yates’ is like an Aladdin’s cave with little departments leading off other departments. If there’s a downside it is that the layout is not disabled friendly with some areas unreachable without going up (or down) several stairs. However, the staff are so helpful here that the stairs should not put you off as they will gladly help you or bring items from the depths to show you. And it’s not like one of the large stores where staff have been pared down so it’s hard to find anyone, there always seem to be staff on hand to help at Yates. Be prepared to spend time here when you visit, there is so much to see.

R. Yates and Sons is a proper English Country store in Old Malton full of stuff. Worth a visit. We parked nearby and walked to the streets of Old Malton which is really worth a visit. We had an airbnb 10 minutes from here and left it until the last day. Very pleased that we did not miss Old Malton.
We also stumble upon Helmsley which we really enjoyed. Nice old streets with good shops. A clothing store with a photo of Prince Charles. Apparently he used to shop there years ago. My wife really likely the goods and bought a second pair of Dubarry boots. Her first pair apparently needed to be replaced after 15 years!

Gorgeous country store that caters so well for both the towns folk and farmers round Ryedale. In this well-stocked and deceptively large shop you can find; hard-wear, toys, white eletrical goods, quality wood furniture, woven baskets, country footwear, traditional and modern country clothing, cooking utensils, as well as tools including spades and wheel barrows you can see in the photo. The sister gardening shop is over the road where you can find a huge range of goods with proper Yorkshire service.

A good old fashion general store, my husband spent ages looking round saying I havent seen one of those in a long time. A store where they are so helpful and knowledgable and you can but just the odd few nuts and bolts unlike the big stores where you have to buy in 100's.If you want something you can be sure to fine it there

Not many shops like this still exist. An absolute Aladin's cave - anything from top quality country wear to a widget for your Aga. Really helpful and friendly staff. Long may it continue!

An old building, so many different levels and nooks and crannies and they all have different products. Down some stairs is an extensive shoe department with a separate division selling the widest range of socks imaginable. There’s a ladies clothing department and a separate men’s dept. The clothing tends to be country wear rather than high fashion. And I nearly forgot the great greetings cards. A kitchen products section leads through to a household chemicals bit and a good sized gardening section and then on to tools and automotive and decorating. That’s pretty extensive, isn’t it, but they go on. Go down another level and you have household appliances from small hairdryers through gas and electric cookers, fridges and freezers and Aga stoves. Adjacent is an extensive diy section and a lighting department. Whenever we’ve been the staff have been helpful without being intrusive and extremely helpful and knowledgeable. It’s hard to beat.
