TAOBAT and Gurez valley: Gurez valley startsxat Kel in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and ends at Taobat in Pakistan part of AJK. It can be called the "Jewel of Azad Kashmir" without any doubt. Gurez valley starts from Kel and last point in Pakistan is Taobat. Taobat is four and a half hour jeep drive from Kel. The valley is one of the most beautiful valleys on earth (and believe me, I have been to Switzerland and Austria, but they are no where near Gurez valley or Taobat). All along the way, the mountain road winds up along Neelum river (Kishan Ganga). There are many beautiful waterfalls along the way where you can take a break for photos and relaxation. The mountains are lush green and local wooden houses are scattered all along the valley adding to its beauty. In between Kel and Taobat, you can stop at Sardari or Janwai where you can have tea or light meals in local shops (nothing fancy). Local walnuts are worth a try. When you cross Janwai, you will have to show your original CNIC and just before Taobat, your CNIC will be taken by Army personnel and returned to you when you return (since this is the last point before LOC and then India starts). You can have nice lunch (including fresh water trout) and there are local hotels at Taobat where you can stay for the night if you wish. You can return to Kel if you leave Kel early and will still have quite some time to enjoy the Gurez valley, its waterfalls, local wood houses as well as time at Taobat. Here are some pictures of the beautiful Gurez valley and Taobat.

It is hidden beauty in Pakistan. Pakistan is rich in beautiful and astonishing places. All type of land forms are found there. Tourists who ever been in Pakistan, love to come back as soon as possible. I with my friends decided to visit Azad Kashmir and specially Neelum Valley because of its fame and beauty whom we had listened about alot. When we reached in Kel it was so beautiful that can not be explain by words. A land of greenish mountains, valleys, roaring Neelum River throug the valley and wonderful weather. It added to our joy when we haunted trout fish in cold water of river. A fish that is known by its taste all over the world. The taste was delicious and unforgettable. Then next day we headed towards Taobat that takes 4 hours of tiring and dangerous journey. We forget all the irritation and pain of journey when we get on ground of Taobat. I have never seen such of admiring beauty all my life. It was like we were standing at some place in Heaven. We booked hotel and stayed there at night. All the houses were made of wood. and were skilfully adjusted on the foundation of hand made stone wall. That was completely insane to built house on such wall that we feel could collapse easily (just Imagination). Next day we trolled the area and praise the Allah for such marvellous gift to our country.
You should visit if you really admire natural beauty at least once in life.

Two valleys start from Kel, Shantour and Gurez. Gurez is long narrow valley with many villages on the way. The main town called Taobat and its almost 45 km from Kel but takes at least 4 hours. Road is bit scary but memorable adventure. Many check points along the road and have to prove and submit identity in Halmat before Taobat. For this one of the group member must have identity as one is already submitted at Kel. Amazingly unlikely the other parts of Neelum, Gurez people are Dardic and they speak Shina. There are very few guest houses/hotels, so its better to book in advance.

Neelum valley towards its confluence point with GB religion of Pakistan converts into Gurez valley.

It is undoubtedly the land of striking beauty, lush green rolling grounds, pine hills, wood cottages, cherry trees, meandering emerald riverine accompanying you on every turn. Seeing is believing, i just can't find any piece of territory synonymous or comparable to this amazing territory.
Accessible during spring, fall and summers, served with a metal road up to Keran, this part of valley is jeepable.

If you're energetic, nature lover and adventurous... you got to be here.

One of the most beautiful parts of Neelum Valley, Gurez Valley is just heavenly. You can hire a 4x4 jeep up from Kel (Although I would recommend taking a jeep from Sharda so you also cover the Sharda-Kel bad patch of the road). It is a beautiful off road approx 50 miles - 4 hours travel with the ferocious Neelum River and untouched dense forests. You will encounter places like Machal waterfall, Jamgarh village with houses having all red-orange roofs, Janwai, Phulawai, Saonar, Sardari, Helmat, Nikron, Karimabad and in the end you will reach the village Taobat where natural beauty reaches it's peak. Just after Taobat the course of river Neelum is diverted into Indian territory where it is known as Kishanganga river.

You will also get to experience the beautiful and unique culture of Gurez Valley, their houses and their food. Many people visiting Neelum Valley visit it up to Kel and return back or visit just Arang Kel which I have heard is said to be one of the most beautiful spots of Neelum Valley. However I was traveling in that area for the first time so I wanted to travel the whole road till the last point Taobat for my first trip. I didn't visit Arang Kel or Shounter Valley. So it is up to you if you turn back from Kel, Arang Kel or Taobat or both.

Jeep drivers take about Rs. 12000 for one day round trip from Sharda to Taobat. When I was in Taobat I met some guys who traveled on Public Transportation and paid something from Rs.250-400 (Not sure though) for one person. But in that case you probably won't have the liberty to make stops at desired places. Spare at least one day for Gurez Valley if you want to visit Taobat, however spending a night and next day over must be a treat.
