Ondanks de grote rol die de baron Liedts heeft gespeeld in de geschiedenis, blijft er van de grandeur van zijn vroegere residentie weinig over. Het kasteeltje is weliswaar redelijk onderhouden en ook wat er resteert van het park, maar het is echt geen omweg waard, zeker niet in de winter.

Het buitenverblijf van de baton Liedts ligt een park hetgeen is aangelegd in Engelse stijl. Een grote waterpartij, lelies en planten vormen het decor. Het buitenverblijf is n j et te bezoeken. Leuk, maar had er meer van verwacht...

We saw this castle on July 9. It stands in a green park with a pond. If you follow the pathway around the pond towards the castle you will see an information board with the history of this castle and the owners.
You can not visit the inside of the castle. Actually it is more a mansion.

Travellers expecting to find a ‘real’ medieval or Renaissance castle will be disappointed when visiting ‘Liedts castle’. The brick and sandstone building -a transformed classicist mansion from 1865 – only dates from the late 1880s. Yet architect Edmond Van de Vijver clearly did his best to make it look much older by using a mixture of gothic and Renaissance style elements like stepped gables, bay windows with stained glass, a sculpted balcony, front steps flanked by lion statues, and a tower and turret at the back where there is also a nice old lamppost which used to stand on themarket. Baron Charles Liedts’s motto “All for Duty”.is sculpted on the central gable. This is certainly not the type of architecture we like most but, seen from the garden, over the pond, Liedts castle looked quite picturesque. The building is now housing a private organisation and doesn’t seem open to visitors.
The historic garden surrounding the house (1860s) has been preserved. It’s a typical landscape garden with winding paths, a kidney shaped pond, a romantic tower ruin, little bridges, lawns and a large number of tall trees. The ice house, which was used to store ice from the pond, is now used as a bat shelter. We read somewhere there were also remains of a ravelin from the Dutch period (1815-1830) but we couldn’t find them.
When we visited, on a Sunday in August, the park was almost deserted. It wasn’t at its best either. Parts were closed off because there was a danger of falling branches (or even trees?). The recent heatwave had also damaged the lawns. But there were several people in the numerous allotment gardens in the corner of the park, harvesting fruit and vegetables.

If you like to spend time walking in the parks, it is a nice place. If you imagine to see a special, you will not be impresses. The Castle is on the way to Liefmans brewery, so you can combine them.

After the death of baron Liedts in the year 1907, the park and the castle came under the supervision of the city council. And after the second world war the park was opened to visitors, and so it made his first primarily a social function. The 6 ha large park who is open to the public, is the green lung of the city, and is freely accessible from sunrise to sunset. And is a very nice location to have a walk in nature.

Prachtig park met heel veel mooie kantjes en hoekjes.
Meren en riviertjes, omgevallen boom dat een attractie is geworden en mooi.
Wij waren in dit park tijdens toen ze hier optredes gaven van schoolkinderen, het sprookjesbos.
Zeer leuk, veel volk en ambiance en we hadden ok goed weer.
Een aanrader!
