I'm planning a trip to Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion in July. This is a road trip from Florida and my family's first time out West. I'm trying to book all our accommodations for the trip and am feeling pretty frustrated about the lack of sites available for reservation online. I'm one day from the opening of the reservation window for my desired date and all sites are already booked. I've read that you need to arrive early (by 8?) to secure a "first come" spot especially on the weekend. We are planning to drive up from the Grand Canyon on Saturday, July 15th so I don't see us making it there by 8 or any time before noon to secure a spot for ourselves. I'm hoping someone familiar with the campgrounds in the area can offer a little guidance here. I've considered leaving GC late on the 14th and staying overnight in a hotel near Bryce Canyon so we can get into the park early enough to get a camping spot. Am I needlessly worrying about this or will it be necessary to take this step?

Hi Michelle sorry for the delay - travelling at the moment!

We booked our sites months in advance and once there every single site was full! I don't really know the chances of getting one on the day but we did see lots of visitors entering the park very early - for sunrise. There were lots of staying places around so you might be able to fall back if you don't find a place?

We couldn't get spaces for quite a few of the parks we visited and that was October so I guess July is just very busy.

Sorry I can't help much more.

Hope you enjoy it - magical places!!!

Si

July is a very busy time of the year for all of the parks you are going to visit. There are camp areas outside the park that you will be open. The Bryce canyon area is quite small, you can drive to Cannonville in 15 minutes and there is a campground there. Ruby's Inn has camping right next to the park entrance and there are usually open spots there as well. Not sure how busy the weekend of July 15 will be in 2017, but try to get a spot early if possible. If not, there are options within less than 1/2 hour from the park. Hope that helps.
