What an experience. Zack picked me up on time to transfer me to UMB&B. The view from the short boat ride was stunning. I’m impressed he took care of me and my luggage while navigating on this scary, wide, brown river (Kinabatangan river). I’m secured on the boat because he had a life jacket, should I need it.
UMB&B is a family owned business. Zack with his sisters, Lina and Ilene with their cousins runs this cute, relaxing place. They have 3 individual rooms facing the river, with shared bathrooms and showers, and a 2 individual rooms with in-room bathrooms on the back side of the property. They plan to build another room in the near future. They’re also in the process of building a bird-watching place.
Lina, the chef of the B&B will not disappoint you with the dishes she prepares for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you’re hanging out the dining area at around 2 or 3 pm, she’ll prepare light dishes. Oh I loved her fried bananas complimented by hot tea or coffee ( which is always available at the dining area).
This place also has the resident one-eyed owl. I’ve seen it one time. Travelers stop here during night boat cruise to try to spot the elusive bird.
Zack took us for forest trekking. I’ve seen several insects and bugs. The highlight was seeing an orangutan playing up in the trees. I was so excited. They do have elephant tracks and poo too. Their property is rich in birds and animals. Other resorts come here to do night forest trekking.
I had a relaxing time, as I was able to fully enjoy this B&B.
One tip, don’t forget to bring insect repellents. Overall, travelers will like this place as it’s home away from home.

Great birding with the friendly and knowledgeable guide, Awang Amad. Good communication and planning with the efficient Erin. Excellent food, with my vegetarian requirements well catered for by the accomplished cook.
We WhatsApp'ed Erin to organise the 3D2N package. She also sorted out our transfers to and from the jetty. Erin arranged a local driver, Joe, who was prompt, friendly and competitively priced (we compared to Grab) for the road transfers to and from the jetty.
The B&B has 3 rooms, spacious and comfortable under a ceiling fan. There are two toilets (male and female) and two shower cubicles. All clean. The mosquito netting on the windows worked well.
The food was truly outstanding. The portions were generous. Drinking water, tea and coffee were provided. We ate on the balcony, and in the evening, a palm civet cane to the fruiting tree just beyond the balcony, providing entertainment.
Awang is an amazing guide. We saw the 'Borneo five'- great to see orangutan and pygmy elephant. 6am boat safari provided productive birding- six Hornbills!
Sad to leave such warm and generous hosts. These are really nice people.

A small but cosy B&B lodge with only 3 rooms. Stayed three nights with my husband, another couple who are friends, and our guide. There is no airconditioning, which was sorely missed on the first night as it was hot and humid. An air cooler didn't help cool the room even with the oscillating ceiling fan on. we finally opened the windows which have meshed nets to prevent insects coming in. but the next two nights were very cool, so we didn't miss the AC at all. The rooms were clean and comfortable. There are two shared bathrooms and two toilets. Shampoo and/or bath gel are in the room with towels provided as well. The kettle is not needed as there is filtered water and hot water available at the dining area. The home-cooked food was delicious and there were always four dishes - two meats and two vegetables. The boat was comfortable and large enough for five of us, excluding the boat driver/spotter Zac who was great in finding birds! Got my top wish for the river granted twice - Bornean pgymy elephants! just incredible watching them. Plenty of birdlife. It was heaven cruising on the river and its tributaries.

Small unassuming B&B (only 3 rooms) but packed a punch! We had a comfortable stay; the room had a rotating/oscillating ceiling fan, two single beds, a dresser, clothes hook behind the door and an air cooler (what a surprise!). The rooms face the river which meant you could sit and chill outside the room whilst watching boats pass by and spot wildlife 😉 Meals were of good variety and portion, consisting tasty homecooked-style local dishes and included fruits - we stayed 3D2N and there were no repeats. Compliments to the chef - Lina!! Coffee and tea were made available first thing in the morning with bread, butter and jams before the early morning boat cruise at 6 a.m. There is water dispenser for hot and warm drinking water. Bathroom and WC are on a shared basis - clean and spacious. Activities were similar to other operators at the Kinabatangan and were spaced out well. In 3D2N, we had 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners, 2 tea breaks, jungle trekking, 2 afternoon boat cruise, and 2 morning boat cruise (additional session of boat cruise doable at RM50/pax).
The added plus point was our fantastic boat operator cum nature guide, Awang! He is an amazing spotter and knows the wildlife at Kinabatangan well, including birds. He showed us some uncommon bird species which were usually not easy to spot/see, and being birdwatchers, we were ecstatic! Thank you to our hosts, Awang and Erin, for the warm hospitality. We would love to visit again and won't hesitate to stay at Ulu Malapi B&B.
