Unfortunately I would not recommend Whangamata Motor Camp. My daughter was on a school camp and accidentally locked her key in the cabin, so went to the office (as her teacher asked her to) to get the cabin unlocked. A guy (who apparently doesn't work there, but lives there) told her to F*** off and sleep on the grass. The teachers went and got bedding from a family bach and got the girls sorted for the night. The next morning both my daughter and the teacher tried to get a key again from the office, the guy again refused to get it for them and told them he would trespass them. Finally a kind cleaner quietly gave them a key. The teachers approached the police about the matter. I rang the motor camp office after speaking to the teacher today and the woman just raised her voice at me repeating what do you want me to do? She then hung up on me. If you are going to live at a motor camp, you need to realize that these things happen and that you need to be polite to people whether you are staff or living with staff onsite. Kindness and manners go a long way.

Great location 150m pleasant walk from the beach and also from the township cafes ... . Is quite tired but priced accordingly, facilities have been well cleaned and painted recently. The predominance of old but tidy cabins and caravans takes away from the campground experience but we had great neighbours. Nearly all had dogs, no problems at all with.
Reception very welcoming and helpful, large sites, many are beside the road, no traffic noise overnight. Summer only grass sites adjacent to Beverley Terrace look promising. WiFi very very slow albeit quiet season. Does get extraordinarily busy over summer school holidays. Kitchen toaster and hobs challenging to use (bang the toaster control down, and tap the touch hobs quite hard), showers excellent pressure and heat. No real shade.
We will probably stay again, not in the heat of mid-summer.

We recently spent a night here while travelling in the area. The camp looks like it is going through some renovations. Toilet blocks have had a paint and are very tidy looking. New fencing in the area we stayed. Unfortunately very dusty sites not helped by all the dry weather we have been having.
Reasonable sized sites but wonder how cramped it could be during peak times.
Much of the camp appears to be permanent caravans.
Only a short walk to good beach, town and harbour area.
Very well priced and pleasant man in office

The majority of sites are sold to folks who have a caravan and then extend it. So for much of the year it can be fairly empty. But there are a variety of camp sites for visitors. The staff are friendly and helpful. Facilities clean. Showers $1. I have been here three times in recent weeks. Once with my son and twice on my own. Each time I met other people. I really like the place. If you like Indian food you won't find better than the Chilli Cove, just a stones throw away.

I am from New Zealand and am used to rustic accommodation. However this accommodation in their cabins was horrific, filthy under the bunk beds and generally unwelcoming. When I asked for a one night refund, I was meet with a glare from the husband of the site. No understanding whatsoever. For nzd5.00 per night per person in addition, we stayed a little way up the road in a beautiful 3 star hotel, which was amazing and far more accommodating. I am sorry, but no one should hv to stay in this quality of accommodation, it is embarrassing to the NZ tourism industry.
